Allan Detrich attended the Ohio Institute of Photography in Dayton, and crafted his own work-study program, earning academic credits by working as a photographer for the Kettering-Oakwood Times. He then began working for the Xenia (Ohio) Daily Gazette while in college.

 

After leaving school, Allan joined the Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune as chief photographer. From there, he was hired as the sole photographer for the Sunday edition of the Sun-Journal (Lewiston, Maine), where he worked until 1989, when he was honored as New England Photographer of the Year. Allan then went to work for The Blade newspaper (Toledo, Ohio). In April of 2007, he went freelance and is now doing commercial, work as well as working in the fitness.

 

In 1998 Allan was Runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize in feature photography for a five-part series, "Children of the Underground," an in-depth look at a covert underground organization that hides abused children. In 2004, Allan was the lead photographer on an investigative project on the chemical element Beryllium that was a Pulitzer finalist in the investigative series category.

 

Allan has won numerous awards, including the Ohio News Photographers Association Photographer of the Year (POY) award four times, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar POY twice, and the National Press Photographers Association Region 4 POY twice. He has also won many national awards, including four Clarion awards, and the National Headliner award. He has also won several National Press Photographers Association Picture of the Year awards, and New England POY.

 

Allan's work has appeared in the following publications: Sports Illustrated, Time, Life Magazine, Marie Claire, Success From The Home Magazine, Lake Erie Living Magazine, MSNBC on the Internet, USA Today, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Houston Chronicle, The LA Times, The World & I, American Heritage, Picture Week, People Magazine, and The Best of Photojournalism 19 and 20.

For a hobby and for thrills, Allan has been storm chasing in the plains for over twenty-three years. He has also covered numerous hurricanes including Gloria, Floyd and Rita. In 2002, his photo of a killer tornado ripping through downtown Tiffin, Ohio earned Detrich a Photo of the Year honor from TIME Magazine and many other of Detrich’s storm photos have won other photojournalism awards. He is also a founding member of the storm chase group M.E.S.O. and is a National Weather Service/NOAA certified SKYWARN Trained Storm Spotter.

 

Allan Detrich currently is a freelance photographer. He is married and a father of three. He is a native of Attica, Ohio and currently resides in Fremont, Ohio.
